Geolock services from Radica

Radica have introduced geolocking to comply with the new PPL Internet Streaming rules, where there are 2 different prices to stream, UK only, and internationally.

Radica offer 2 different solutions, script level geolocking and DRM geolocking. Script level geolocking is free to all radica customers and the DRM solution has a monthly cost, prices available on request.

Script level

Every online computer has an IP assigned to it, and each country's IP range is different. We can identify which country the majority of visitors are from and block them accordingly. This is a around 90% accurate, mainly because AOL have proxy servers for UK users based in France and Germany, therefore AOL home users based in the UK may be blocked and vice versa. The database is updated every month and if a UK based end user that has been blocked sends us their public IP address we can ask for them to be unblocked. Some French AOL users appear to come from Great Britain or Germany due to the way that AOL routes their traffic through proxy servers. It is not possible to target AOL users on a state level, due to the way that AOL routes traffic from multiple states through the same IP address.

DRM solution

This solution also uses a database to check everyone's IP address but the difference is that the source audio is encrypted so it is extremely difficult for people to by-pass the checks and get the stream from outside of the permitted area.
