DIY Encoding

Windows Media Encoder 9 Setting up your own encoder is very simple. Windows Media® Encoder 9 Series is available to download free of charge from Microsoft. You can install the Windows Media Encoder 9 Series on a computer running either Microsoft Windows® XP or Windows 2000. You are advised to read the required and recommended hardware requirements first.

Radica has produced some simple self-help guidelines on setting-up an encoder. These are available to download here (5 printable pages in pdf format, 1800 kb), or viewed online here.

AACPlus

There are 2 options for AACPlus encoding, either shoutcast which is free or orban soundcard and software encoder package which is not free.

AACPlus's main attraction is the bandwidth saving that can be made. A 32kbps AACPlus stream is of the same quality as a 128kbps Windows media stream. Therefore the savings in bandwidth are huge and you get a better sound quality.

Currently only Winamp and VLC can play AACPlus streams natively but there is a download from the Orban website so AACPlus stream can play on Windows Media Player. The plugin for windows media player is www.orban.com/plugin/
