RSL - Link Transmission

Why might you need a link transmission system?

The answer is simply that the main factors determining how far the signal from your station travels are primarily your aerial height above ground level and that the fact that FM signals are effectively blocked by buildings and hills that are higher than the transmitting aerial.

The maximum aerial height for RSLs permitted by Ofcom is currently 20m above ground level. The obvious way to limit the effect of this restriction is to site your transmitter on a nearby hill or tall building that overlooks your required catchment area. Consequently it will not always be possible, or practical, to co-locate your studio and transmitter.

Radica has an extensive stock of Studio-to-Transmitter Radio Link Systems available should you wish to broadcast from a remote site.

From mono 50MHz systems to stereo systems operating in the 200MHz and 800MHz bands we will be pleased to offer impartial technical advice to ensure that your particular requirements are met. Your proposed link co-ordinates can be fed into our software and the results will help us decide on system suitability.

All of our link systems require a licence from JFMG Ltd - the government-appointed agency responsible for programme-making frequency allocation in the UK (and separate and distinct from Ofcom's RSL department, who licence broadcasting). A member of Radica staff will be happy to talk you through the application procedure. We can even apply for frequencies on your behalf should you require. This means we can give expert help in case of difficulty with a frequency allocation. JFMG can be contacted on

Radica can also supply High Power Radio Microphone systems should you wish to send a roving reporter out in the field. These systems have been extensively used at venues such as international air shows and major sporting events.

All systems come complete with antennae and your required length of coaxial cable. Insured delivery and collection is included in the price should you wish to hire the equipment on a 'dry hire' basis. Alternatively a skilled Radica engineer is available to install the system for you.
